Hearing about the favorable effects breast augmentation surgery can have makes it hard to compute that their might also be some unfavorable sides of it too.
I’m all about focusing on the positive girl, but it’s also worth being aware about both sides of the breast augmentation story.
Breast augmentation is the top surgical procedure in the U.S.
In 2011, there were over 300,000 breast augmentations in the U.S.!
That's a lot of women deciding to get breast implants.
It's a surgery that, for most women, the benefits far outweigh any possible risks (e.g. complications).
But, like so many other things in life, there are two sides to most aspects of your breast augmentation journey. Here's my round-up of the top 3.
1. Your Breast Augmentation results aren't instant
Ok, so you definitely go in to surgery with your 'pre' boobs, and you definitely come out of surgery with your 'new' boobs (with breast implants in place). But, the 'visual result' isn't immediate.
It’s only natural to build-up in your mind that your surgeon is your magical fairy 'boob' mother.
But, the reality is that the wave of a surgical scalpel isn’t magic and you won’t wake up with perfect breasts. In fact, the journey to your new ideal breasts happens over the weeks and months after your day of surgery.
The key is to have a healthy dose of patience (one of my Boobie Mantras!). And, with time, you will see the magic... as your breast implants settle, and your new breasts emerge.
2. Joy and worry with breast implants
I can honestly say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been with my body with breast implants. It really is a new kind of joy.
But, it’s perfectly natural (at times) to worry that the joy won’t last, that at some point you’ll be faced with a decision for a revision. Likely with the natural aging of your implants and/or your body, you’ll need to address your breasts again in the future.
The key here is know that breast implants aren’t lifetime devices (and that complications are a risk of surgery).
So, be realistic and recognize that by getting breast implants you’re signing yourself up for potential future surgeries (depending when in your life you get breast implants). And then go and enjoy the time you have with your new breasts!
3. Not everyone will love your breast implants as much as you
When you start to see your new breasts evolve it's not uncommon to feel a surge in your body confidence.
And this is what people often notice, before they notice your breasts! You hold yourself higher and walk more confidently... not to mention fitting your clothes better (and fuller up top).
Welcome to being in love with your breast implants, and your new body confidence.
Unfortunately not everyone will be cheering on the new girls the same way you do. Breast augmentation is a very personal decision. Other people's opinions of your surgery choice may flow freely. And there will always be those who think you should accept your breasts the way they are.
The key here is to have your rebound strategies and to ensure the love of your new body (and confidence) trumps the misunderstanding haters.
You’ll come to learn there’s often a double edge to a lot of things in life, and a breast augmentation journey is no different.
When you choose to focus on the positive side of things and how your positive decision is a positive thing for you (total intentional overuse of the word positive there!) you can make sure one of those double-edges of the sword is somewhat blunt. Knowing about and accepting those double edges will help you have a positive boobie journey to your new girls :)
Thoughts from Dr. Michelle RoughtonJenny Eden is right, it definitely does take some time (usually several months) before your implants settle and you begin seeing the longer-term result. And while there's no expiration date on the implants, depending on when in your life you have an augmentation, you may choose to change your implants.
That being said, if you're happy with how everything is going, there's no definite timeline to change them. The bottom line is what's most important is whatever ultimately provides you with the look that you're seeking.
