Jenny Eden: It would be really easy for me to focus on all the amazing accomplishments that Ashleigh Munro-Smith has realized in her life, including being a ZOO Weekly Australia Cover Girl, Miss Hawaiian Tropic Australia, and Lingerie Model of the Year(!!).
But most importantly, I want to make sure all you ladies know how much Ashleigh cares about you having a positive breast augmentation experience. She was extremely kind and transparent in my interview with her, and I know you're going to get a lot out of her story. Enjoy! :-)
Why Ashleigh Decided to Get Breast Implants
Growing up I always knew that I wanted bigger breasts, as I had absolutely nothing to begin with. I was self-conscious in a bikini and felt really out of proportion with my wide shoulders, hips and a booty. I waited until I was 100% ready to put my body through a major change, and I made sure I was mentally prepared for the procedure.
At 22 years of age (September 2010) I felt more than ready and got 345cc silicone gel (round, medium profile) breast implants with half behind the muscle and half in front.
Complications From Ashleigh's Breast Augmentation
They say to give the healing process 6-12 months to determine the final result, but unfortunately I noticed something wasn’t right and my plastic surgeon confirmed that the right breast wasn’t sewn into the pocket properly. This caused it to droop and go into my armpit when I laid down.
He brought out my 3-week post op photos and said “Oh yes, you can see here it started to drift to the side”.
This was absolutely devastating for me.
I just spent over $15,000 to change something which dramatically affected my self-confidence, and if I were to have correction surgery it would have costed me approximately another $3,000.
I held so much resentment towards my plastic surgeon and hated my breasts all over again. He failed to notice his fault early after my breast augmentation surgery, and it could have been fixed at no cost to me. As it was just over a year after my surgery that I brought it to his attention, apparently I would have had to of paid and I couldn’t justify it.
There was no way I was giving him any more of my hard earned money.
It bothered me every single day that I had to look at myself, and so I began asking my girlfriends questions about their surgeries to see what my next option could be. I was really impressed with a lot of the procedures that were performed overseas, so again when I felt ready I decided to go to Phuket, Thailand.
It was exactly 4 years to the date that my breast augmentation surgery took place on the 16th of September, 2014. I had revision surgery as well as a breast augmentation, increasing the size to 550cc silicone gel (round, behind the muscle, high profile.) This sounds big but my plastic surgeon explained that if I only increased to 450cc, it’s basically the size of a shot glass and the implant would be wider, not fuller.
In order for me to achieve my desired look of having my breasts closer together with more projection, I trusted my plastic surgeons recommendation of 550cc...
...and I couldn’t be happier with the final result!
Ashleigh's Advice to Women Getting Breast Implants
Cosmetic breast surgery is a personal choice and one that you should only make if you are more than certain. I cannot stress enough how important it is to do your research on plastic surgeons and have a look at their before and after photos.
Don’t be afraid to ask people for their recommendations and their personal experiences.
I spent 4 years after my first breast augmentation surgery asking everyone I knew on their experience, and spent hours researching blog sites and forums. Once you gather enough answers to all the questions you have, book a consultation with the experts and start your journey from there.
We always hear in the media that we shouldn’t go overseas to have breast augmentation surgery because you hear of so many ‘botched jobs’. But why don’t we hear about the botched jobs that are done in our own home town?
The only regret I have about the whole procedure is not researching my option to have my breast augmentation surgery abroad to begin with. Everything about my experience overseas was positive and I couldn’t speak highly enough of the nurses, surgeons and facilities at the hospital.
Ashleigh's Favorite Parts about Having Breast Implants
The best part about having breast implants is the confidence it has given me, feeling complete as a woman.
I love curves and am just so pleased with the final result.
Some of the benefits I love most are no longer having to buy chicken fillets (also known as stick on bras) or inserts to give me a cleavage, as I was still doing this after my first breast augmentation surgery. Shopping for bikinis has never been easier, and I no longer need padding. It’s fantastic!
An Encouraging Word from Ashleigh
My life mantra is to “never let your past be an excuse of your future”. As much as we experience times of doubt and negativity, we need to remember that even though we can’t see past what is happening in that moment, things WILL get better.
Life won’t throw things at us that we can’t handle.
Try and find what it is that you’re passionate about. What is something that excites you the second you think about it? Create goals and be determined to achieve them. The minute you start believing in yourself, amazing things can happen and doors of opportunities will open for you. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t be the person you want to be.
