There are two types of breast implants approved for use in the United States for breast augmentation surgery: saline-filled and silicone gel-filled breast implants.
The three most popular manufacturers in the USA of silicone and saline breast implants are: Mentor, Allergan and Sientra.
The breast implants that these three companies make vary in size, shell thickness (the outer part of the implant), shell surface texture and shape. All of this means YOU have an amazing selection of breast implants to choose from so your breast augmentation is totally tailored to you and your aesthetic goals!
To supplement any information your surgeon gives you, here's my rundown of these top 3 breast implant manufacturers.
Based in the US, Mentor was founded in 1969. Mentor have a range of implants:
MemoryShape® Breast Implants - this is a teardrop-shaped (aka anatomical) implant that was FDA approved in 2013. These implants are designed to give a natural look and youthful firmness (due to a highly cohesive silicone gel filling, which keeps its shape). Like other anatomical implants they have a textured surface to keep the implant in place and their shape mimics the silhouette of a natural breast.
MemoryGel® Breast Implants - this is a round-shaped implant that was FDA approved in 2006. Implants come with either a textured or smooth surface and are available in a wide range of sizes and profiles to fit your body. Not as firm as the MemoryShape these implants still have a cohesive gel filling so they have a natural look and feel.
Saline Breast Implants - filled with a saltwater solution, this implant comes in a variety of sizes, profiles, and smooth or textured outer shell and were approved by the FDA in 2009. Mentor saline implants are available in round or anatomical.
Allergan is a global pharmaceutical company based in Dublin, Ireland. The company (as is now) came about in 2013 but has roots in the US dating back to 1950.
THE Natrelle™ COLLECTION is Allergan's range of silicone breast implants which offers more than 650 different styles. There are two main types in their Natrelle range:
Natrelle™ INSPIRA™ Round Implants - approved by the FDA since 2009. Their USP is a special kind of fuller gummy (highly cohesive) silicone implant that keeps upper pole shape but still feels natural. Check out my article on the INSPIRA range [link].
Natrelle™ 410 Anatomical Implants - these are Allergan's anatomical implants and they've been approved by the FDA since 2013. They're the company's 'gummiest' (firmest cohesive silicone) implant but still have a soft/squish factor.
Sientra is based in the US and was founded in 2003. Their current range of silicone breast implants were approved by the FDA in 2012.
Their portfolio of round and shaped silicone implants come in a broad selection of sizes, profiles, projections, and implant surfaces.
The latest range is called OPUS:
OPUS round implants - the round implant range come with either a smooth or textured surface and they're the only silicone breast implants on the market with High-Strength Cohesive (HSC) Silicone Gel. Sientra's round HSC/HSC+ silicone implants are designed to give a natural look and feel while being the strongest cohesive gel. HSC also gives these implants great upper pole fullness.
OPUS shaped implants - Sientra's anatomical implant range was the first to be FDA-approved. The latest range features HSC+ silicone gel, which is designed to hold shape (important with shaped implants) without being too firm.
Rest assured that whatever breast implant manufacturer your surgeon recommends and what individual breast implant characteristics you opt for, the fact that you have so much choice is truly amazing!
