“Are those things real?”
How would you react if you were asked this question? And why do people think of breast implants as 'fake'?
When you hear of cosmetic surgery, what do you think of? Fake, plastic, false?
Unfortunately this is a common image of the plastic surgery world *sigh*. It's probably just our media that tells us a breast augmentation is a vain surgery but, did you know, the word ‘plastic’ in plastic surgery isn't actually taken from the synthetic material but from the Greek word plastikos, which means to form or mold. And there's nothing fake about it.
I read an article the other day that said breast implant surgery is the number one cosmetic surgery in the U.S., even though it carries with it the burden of judgment and dismissal. The article went on to ask whether women get breast implants because they’re superficial, shallow, obsessed with pleasing men, extravagant, or desperate. Needless to say I started to get a bit hot under the collar!
I was relieved when I read on and the article explained that the ‘average’ woman getting breast implants has surgery to improve the appearance/volume of her breasts after pregnancy or weight loss (or both).
But it's doesn't matter why women are getting implants. I’m pretty sure we'd all just shrug and brush off that it isn’t because we’re superficial.
Why Do We Judge?
Sadly though, it seems some people just picture the surgically-enhanced model look when you say ‘breast augmentation’.
What is it about women’s breasts that make having them surgically altered more shocking than say: a nose job, eye job,or facelift? It’s hard to say. Those who opt to get a breast augmentation report higher self-esteem and self-confidence after their surgery. That’s pretty awesome don’t you think?
Judgment is about perception (other people's that is). AND there is no way to control perception, regardless of how much time and energy we spend trying. There will always be people who think cosmetic surgery is fake but it does not mean YOU are not fake. And really, that’s all that matters.
Getting breast implants does not make you fake. Personally, I’d love to see the culture around implants change and move away from one where they’re considered ‘fake’.
Just because you've 'had your boobs done' does not mean you are public property. If you ever find yourself in the thick of a debate about the genuineness of breast implants... remember, what anyone says against them will likely be out of ignorance... and it’ll pass.
