The Sleazy Tale of PIP Implants

If you aren’t familiar with PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) Implants, they were breast implants that posed a huge health hazard because they were being filled with an industrial grade (instead of medical grade) silicone that is meant for use in mattresses.

Once PIP was ousted, this rightfully triggered a global health scare. Production of the PIP implants was banned in 2010, but there are thousands of women who received the implants before the ban.

The biggest concerns from a ruptured PIP implant are cancer, toxic exposures, and inflammation.

Most health advisors recommend getting them taken out immediately, which I agree with.

Fortunately, for those of us in the United States, these implants were rejected by the FDA. Unfortunately, they did make their way to Latin America, Western Europe and Australia. Perhaps the worst part was that wealthier clients would get American medical grade silicone, while everyone else would receive the “house blend.”

Today, the former CEO (Jean-Claude Mas) was convicted of fraud and sentenced to the maximum 4 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay a $103,000 fine and is banned from leading a company or working in medicine ever again.

Four other former PIP executives were also convicted and given lesser sentences. My heart goes out to the women affected by these implants.
